Artist to Artist: Seth Kushner and Dean Haspiel

Artist to Artist: In his book, The Brooklynites, photographer Seth Kushner included a portrait of comic-book artist Dean Haspiel, co-author of The Alcoholic. Here they talk about telling stories through taking and/or drawing pictures.

A side note especially for people tuning into the BRIC Community Media blog:

These guys were some of the greatest guests we’ve had for our Artist to Artist segment. By all means, this doesn’t mean that our other past guests were not also great– it only confirms that we always seem to get some pretty darn classy artists for this segment in Caught In The Act.
When I (your friendly BRIC Community Media Marketing & Communications Manager, Lee Eddy) found out that we’d be featuring the artist responsible for The Alcoholic, my inner comic and graphic novel geek got a little starstruck. I only recently caught the “I Like The Graphic Novel Format” virus from my significant other, Macon.  A month prior to Dean Haspiel’s appearance, Macon had handed me a copy of The Alcoholic and said, “No. Seriously. This is really a faaaaaantastic book.” I nodded politely and took the copy of The Alcoholic and said, “Sure, babe. I’ll check it out.”
Fast forward to four days later, the darn thing is read cover to cover and I’m licking my fingers trying to soak up whatever last bits of the pages might’ve remained. It was— well, faaaaaaantastic. Especially the images that Haspiel presented…. the world that the main character journeys through reflects the bleakness and the– I’ll stop. You should read it and form your own opinions.

After listening to this interview I am now putting The Brooklynites in my “Read This” queue. It’s obvious that Mr. Kushner and Mr. Haspiel love Brooklyn and are sincerely excited about presenting their home in a light that neither glorifies nor diminishes the borough. You know, the way you’re supposed to.

Anyway. If you enjoyed getting to know Seth and Dean in this segment, I encourage you to check out their work. (Seth’s here: http://sethkushner.com/ and here: http://sethkushner.blogspot.com/ Dean here: http://deanhaspiel.com/)
