On this week’s Reporter Roundtable host Brian Vines and guests discuss innovative ways to incorporate the arts in an ever decreasing education budget, and how new policies are affecting arts in Brooklyn schools. The panel of artists and educators includes Brooklyn Arts Council’s Arts in Education Director Carol Sterling, Victoria Restler, the Senior Program Associate at WorldSavvy, Brooklyn Brownstone’s art teacher Jackie Samayoa and arts educator/artist Yamini Nayar.

High School students perform surgery in class.

The Comfort of Strangers: Afflicted with diabetes, a group of young people form a club at SUNY Downstate where they gather strength from each other and learn how to “live with a pump.”

School for Surgery: Lutheran Hospital’s “O.R. to the Schools” program brings a mock operating room right into the classroom, teaching teens what goes on during an operation. Plus they get to see there are careers to be had in health care.

Latina Teen Suicide: Why does this particular group of adolescents have the highest rate of attempted suicides among all American teens? Host Monica Sweeney, MD, talks to the representatives of two suicide prevention programs.

Healthy Creativity: A husband and wife, both musicians, perform for patients at Woodhull Hospital. And by entertaining, they earn themselves health care credits – all part of the innovative Artist Access program.

On this episode we further explore this creatively charged community. We visit Samuel Nigro, a visionary video artist and sculptor who primarily works in stone; catch up with entrepreneur Anna Castellani who opened the neighborhood’s first café, The DUMBO General Store as well as the super-chic Forager’s Market; stop by and chat with Andre Torres, founder of Wax Poetics Magazine; meet some visiting artists at the Triangle Workshop; and finally, take in an innovative multi-media show at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
