Superstorm Sandy left a trail of destruction all over New York, and sanitation workers are bearing the brunt. They worked on a special 12-hour shift to help others cleanup and rebuild houses. At the same time, they have to face the conflict between being others’ heroes and saving their own homes, as many of them live in the most-hit areas. Stephen Perente is one of them. He lives in Broad Channel, one of the most devastated areas in NY. He works in Brooklyn 18 Garage, where there are more than 80 sanimen working at the same time on a daytime shift. Like all other sanimen in his team, he worked overtime in an effort to keep up with the collection of trash.
